This week, Doncaster Council’s Cabinet agreed (subject to potential call in) to appoint MAM to
operate Doncaster and Mexborough Markets.
MAM said about this news:
“We are excited to be part of the next chapter of this historic market and are looking to the future where we will be investing £2.3 million in the first 5-years and £6.2 million over the 25-year contract. This will save the Council £219k per year and will pay a guaranteed income for the Council of £122k.
“We believe in the long-term future of the Markets and will be looking to attract new customers, whilst ensuring the Market retains its rich heritage and traditional market feel. The existing offer of fresh fruit & vegetables, meat, fish sold by independent retailers is a jewel in Doncaster’s crown, and we want to help these businesses to thrive and encourage other small independent businesses to find their home at Doncaster Market.
“Over the next year we will be undertaking survey and enablement works and consulting with existing traders, listening to their views of the Markets and their vision for the future. We are excited about the launch of the Wool Market, which will see a different type of offer, trading six days a week (including weekends) and offering a communal eating space and stage area which will stimulate the evening
economy Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
“We understand the challenges facing retailers and high streets nationwide but believe that Markets have a central place in shaping consumer social habits. We want to empower small business owners and make the Markets a hub for the local community. We hope that the people of Doncaster and Mexborough will support us in our mission to make their Markets a vibrant destination for shopping,
eating, entertainment and entrepreneurial spirit.
