NABMA and COVID-19 – The Story so Far – Fighting for your Future

Market operators last night received the confirmation from the Prime Minister that outdoor markets in England can open again from 1 June, and all non essential retail in England can open from 15 June. This, of course, subject to compliance with government guidance.

The last 3 months have seen NABMA on a daily basis seek to support our membership by providing up to the minute information; producing guidance; lobbying government and members of parliament; taking part in high street discussions; facilitating Basecamp discussions between market professionals and seeking to deliver its Support Plan for Markets – looking towards benefits for traders, operators and support to start back.

Our work and promotion of the importance of markets has attracted much interest with the media and both within and outside of the markets industry.

That work programme has been set into a timeline to demonstrate to existing, and potential new members, the role and influence that NABMA has played since March, at national and local levels, in representing the wider market industry. It will also be valuable for market officers of the future to look back into the NABMA archives to understand the extreme challenges, pressure and personal risks that their peers faced in 2020.

The pandemic story will continue for many months to come, and the timeline will be updated, but it serves as a reminder of the challenges that the industry has faced so far alongside the role, influence and support that NABMA has delivered to date.
