On Friday 20th May, Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, Simon Baynes MP, joined the Chief Executive of NABMA (the National Association of British Market Authorities), David Preston, on a visit to the market at Tŷ Pawb in Wrexham to highlight their annual ‘Love Your Local Market’ campaign.
The Love Your Local Market fortnight has now been embraced by over 24 countries worldwide, and runs during the last two weeks in May (13 – 27 May).
During the visit, Mr Baynes, who visited the Tŷ Pawb market in his capacity as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Markets Group, met with Dave Cupit, the Operations Manager at Tŷ Pawb, and stallholders to learn more about their experience of running their business in the market.
Among others, Mr Baynes met with Phil Jones of ‘The PIE’d PIE’per’ pie shop who has recently joined the market as a permanent trader having worked as a pop-up trader around the festival circuit. He also met with Steve Tapp of ‘Wrexham Trainer Revival’ who joined the market after being made redundant during the Covid-19 pandemic and is going from strength to strength with his curated range of trainers, refurbs and custom work; and Amjid and Robina Hussain, who have traded in the Tŷ Pawb market since they opened, and also run Candylicious Sweets in the same market.
David Preston said:
“NABMA is grateful to Simon Baynes MP for his endorsement and support of the market industry and also the annual Love Your Local Market campaign celebrated throughout the UK and in 25 countries worldwide.
“Year on year, the appreciation of the value of markets increases and never more so than during Love Your Local Market 2022. This recognising the huge contribution that markets have made to their communities during the hardships of the pandemic and the value and pride placed in the local market and its local businesses. Love Your Local Market helps profile the vibrancy, history and individuality of a town and its market with the added offers of low entry business start-up opportunities and many environmental gains with less packaging, local food and less miles travelled.”
Commenting after the visit, Simon Baynes MP said:
“It is an honour to be the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Markets Group and to promote the importance of our markets and market traders across the UK in keeping our town centres alive and thriving.
“It was a pleasure to visit the market in Tŷ Pawb and to speak to so many exceptional stallholders who are proud of their market and the work they do. The Love Your Local Market campaign is all about celebrating the things that make our local markets special – including our exceptional stallholders who make, bake, design and sell some amazing products and gifts. I would encourage everyone in my constituency of Clwyd South, and elsewhere, to pop to your local market during the next week and support our local traders.”
