West Bromwich’s brand-new indoor market has officially opened on High Street, drawing huge crowds and creating a real buzz in the town centre.
The market, which replaces the former Kings Square site, combines traditional stalls with modern facilities and is part of Sandwell Council’s wider regeneration programme. Backed by more than £4.6m in funding from the Government’s Towns Fund and the council, the market aims to deliver a vibrant destination for both traders and shoppers.
Queues stretched down the street ahead of the 9am opening, with visitors keen to explore the mix of stalls, services and the brand-new food court. One of the biggest attractions was the return of Firkins Bakery, a Black Country favourite that closed in 2015. Its reopening brought back fond memories for many and saw long lines of customers eager to sample its famous cakes, breads and pork pies once again.
The market now hosts a wide variety of traders, including butchers, fishmongers, Caribbean food suppliers, fashion, beauty and homeware stalls. The addition of the food court brings new dining options ranging from Caribbean to Sri Lankan and East Asian cuisine.
Local traders praised the new facility for its modern design, welcoming atmosphere and potential to attract new customers. The opening day also highlighted the important role markets continue to play in high street regeneration, supporting local businesses while offering a unique shopping experience.
Sandwell Council leader Cllr Kerrie Carmichael described the new market as “a proper regeneration for the people of Sandwell” and said it would bring fresh energy and footfall to West Bromwich High Street.
For NABMA, the launch of the new market is a clear example of how investment in markets can transform town centres, boost community pride and create new opportunities for traders.
