European Delegates Gather in Chester for Prestigious International Market Campaign Launch

Delegates from across Europe converged on the historic city of Chester on Saturday, 4th May 2024, for the grand launch of the International Love Your Local Market Campaign. Hosted at the award-winning Chester Market, the event marked a significant milestone in the campaign’s 13-year history, promoting local markets globally.

The new Chester Market, which opened its doors in November 2022, has quickly become a cornerstone of the community, recently surpassing three million visits. This year’s choice of Chester as the launch city reflects the market’s success and its role in revitalizing the local economy and community life.

Councillor Nathan Pardoe, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation, expressed pride in Chester’s selection for this year’s launch. “Hosting the Love Your Local Market international campaign underscores our commitment to celebrating the vital role markets play in our community’s heartbeat,” said Councillor Pardoe.

The event welcomed the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) Retail Group, with Chairman Jean-Paul Auguste highlighting the importance of markets in urban development. “Chester’s vibrant market is a beacon of community and economic success, making it the perfect backdrop for this year’s campaign,” Auguste remarked.

Initiated by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA), Love Your Local Market began as part of a national effort to rejuvenate UK high streets. The campaign has grown significantly, with last year’s participation from over 450 UK markets, drawing substantial media attention and fostering numerous sustainable businesses.

Councillor Chris Poulter, NABMA President, also commented on the event’s success. “Chester Market not only serves as a model of outstanding market management and innovation but also as a celebration of the cultural and economic contributions of markets worldwide,” he stated.

As part of the event, delegates enjoyed a guided tour of both the artisan outdoor market and the newly developed indoor market, where they experienced firsthand the vibrant market culture that Chester is known for. Additionally, they attended a talk on the development of markets in Cheshire West, which provided valuable insights into the strategic growth and community-focused initiatives that have shaped the region’s market scene.

Saturday’s launch event not only spotlighted the global influence of markets but also their enduring role in shaping vibrant, sustainable communities across the globe. As delegates shared insights and experiences, the spirit of collaboration and celebration was palpable, setting a positive tone for the future of local markets everywhere.
