Local Markets, Local Councils and the High Street Free Webinar

Wednesday 9 September @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

NABMA and SLCC offer an opportunity for a virtual discussion about retail markets and their importance to the future renaissance of the high street and their role and influence within local communities.

Coming out of Covid-19 the markets are recognised to be one of the key influencing factors for vibrant and vital high streets. They offer low cost, low risk start up business opportunities and local food provenance is on many agendas.

This is a free event and is open to anyone with an interest in markets and their future. It will however be of interest to the parish, town and community council sector who currently operate markets; or who are considering starting up markets.

PROGRAMME:
SKIPTON MARKET – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

Skipton Town Council are a leading market operator providing many traditional and specialist markets in their town. They have kindly agreed to share the story of their successful markets; the national and local awards they have achieved and the financial and social impact of Covid 19. They will also outline the journey to restart their markets; the local partnerships in place with their BID team and principal council; and how they see Skipton markets and market trading of the future.

LOCAL COUNCILS AND MARKET LAW

A summary review by the NABMA legal team of market law and frequently asked questions. What is a market? Can a local council be a market authority? What are market franchise rights? What is the difference between market trading and street trading?

LOCAL COUNCILS AND LOCAL SERVICES

The influence and expectations upon local councils within town centres is increasing economically, socially and politically. Markets are often the longest standing retail asset in many towns, and their contribution in the past has often been overlooked. Covid 19 has created a reawakening of the value of local services, such as the local market. What is the emerging role and the challenges for local councils to support their town centres? How can they work with, and influence government? The SLCC Chief Executive will share his thoughts on the opportunities and the barriers ahead for the first tier of local democracy.
