Markets – Close to your Heart & the High Street

Markets in communities, towns and cities across the UK are championing innovative ways to remain at the heart of high streets.

Celebrate this year’s LOVE YOUR LOCAL MARKET campaign with NABMA – The National Markets Association.

17th – 31st May 2018 – #LYLM2019

2019 sees the eighth year of NABMA’s “Love Your Local Market” campaign, with immense success it has now been embraced by 24 different countries worldwide.

We estimate the “Love Your Local Market” has given over 11,000 people the chance to sample market trading and that at least 1,000 new businesses have been created.

This year’s theme “Markets – Close To Your Heart” has been adopted by NABMA and the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM). Markets from across the UK will be hosting a range of exciting events, initiatives and new traders offers.

Throughout the eight years of the campaign, the offer of free or discounted stalls / pitches has been Central to “Love Your Local Market”. This has assisted in attracting new market traders, delivering youth events to bring in younger traders / customers and the organisation of community events to demonstrate the wider role of markets. These elements will continue to be an important part of #LYLM2019.

NABMA Chief Executive, Graham Wilson explains:

“When NABMA created Love Your Local Market eight years ago, we never imagined that it would become the biggest celebration of markets that the world has ever seen. In 2018, 24 countries participated in the Love Your Local Market campaign with around 3000 markets involved.

“Markets are at the heart of local communities and Love Your Local Market is very much about emphasising the social dimension of markets. Thousands of events will be taking place within the locations of contributing markets.”

“We also use Love Your Local Market to offer the opportunity to sample market trading, many markets providing free or substantially discounted stalls. In the eight years celebrating LYLM over 10,000 people have tried market trading for the first time and around 1,000 new businesses have been created. We are very proud of what has been achieved and are eagerly looking forward to seeing what our amazing markets can achieve in 2019.”

This year’s global theme is “Markets – Close to Your Heart”. The main purpose of Love Your Local Market is to raise the profile of markets across the UK. This will encourage start-up businesses and increase young people’s involvement in markets.

As well as winning over the hearts of consumers this year, NABMA will be aiming to get to heart of the importance of markets within local communities. Showing why people need to appreciate their local markets.
