Real Deal Week 2025: Celebrating a Safer, Fairer Market Industry

Real Deal Week 2025: Celebrating a Safer, Fairer Market Industry

This week, NABMA proudly launches Real Deal Week 2025, a celebration of a national campaign that has protected UK markets from counterfeit goods and unfair trading for more than 15 years.

Each day, we’ll highlight why the Real Deal campaign is vital for market operators, traders, and communities. We’re inviting all markets—whether indoor, outdoor, or car boot sales—to promote themselves as safe, fair, and trusted spaces for shoppers and a level playing field for genuine traders.

What is the Real Deal?

The Real Deal is the flagship initiative of the National Markets Group for IP Protection, a cross-sector forum dedicated to tackling the trade in counterfeit goods at markets and car boot fairs. NABMA has been an active supporter since its formation in 2008.

Why Do Markets Need the Real Deal?

Markets and car boot sales are not uniformly regulated. This inconsistency creates opportunities for counterfeiters and rogue traders. When fake goods enter a market:

  • Consumers may be sold unsafe or illegal products
  • Legitimate traders lose business
  • Criminal behaviour can take hold
  • Crime in surrounding areas can increase

The Real Deal offers a practical, preventative solution.

A Tried and Tested Solution

The Real Deal:

  • Reassures shoppers
  • Deters illegal trading
  • Strengthens cooperation between market operators and Trading Standards
  • Helps protect the community

Is There a Cost to Join?

No. The scheme is funded by businesses representing IP rights holders. It is free for markets and Trading Standards services to participate.

How to Join the Real Deal

Joining the Real Deal is easy. In the first instance, contact the Real Deal team at info@realdealmarkets.co.uk, who will guide you through the following stages:

Step 1: Review the Real Deal Code of Practice, which outlines procedures to prevent the sale of counterfeit goods. NABMA contributed to its development.

Step 2: Contact your local Trading Standards service to express your interest. If needed, the Real Deal team can help connect you.

Step 3: Once your market is confirmed as counterfeit-free by Trading Standards, you can sign the Real Deal Charter. This public pledge demonstrates your commitment to protecting shoppers and traders.
