Welcoming Carers to Durham Christmas Festival

Welcoming Carers to Durham Christmas Festival

Durham Christmas Festival returns from Friday 29th November to Sunday 1st December 2019, and this year, there’s a very special welcome for carers on the first day of the festival.

On Friday 29th November, carers visiting the festival with the people they care for will be entitled to free entry into the Craft and Gift Marquee on Palace Green.

Colin Wilkes, Managing Director of Durham Markets which organises the festival together with Durham University, said: “We want to make it easier for carers to visit the festival and are hoping that they will take advantage of our offer of free entry into the Craft and Gift Marquee on the Friday. The Friday is usually the least busy day in the marquee on Palace Green and that, together with a small taxi service up to Palace Green able to take a folding wheel chair to help those with walking difficulties, will hopefully give them the opportunity to make the most of this event.”

The three-day festival combines markets full of gift ideas and Christmas treats with special festive events, including Carols for All in Durham Cathedral and the annual Children’s Lantern Procession.

Durham Christmas Festival will entice thousands of visitors from across the North of England and beyond into the city, not only to enjoy the special markets but also to make the most of the city’s attractions, cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops. The four festive markets are the Craft & Gift Marquee* on Palace Green, the Regional Food and Drink Producers’ Market in the Cloisters of Durham Cathedral, a Festive Outdoor Market in the Market Place, and Durham Market Hall open each day of the festival including the Sunday.

Festive entertainment during the festival will include the Children’s Lantern Procession from the Market Place to Durham Cathedral’s St Nicholas Service on Saturday 30th November, and Carols for All in the Cathedral on both the Saturday and Sunday. There will also, as always, be numerous performers throughout the city centre bringing a Christmassy feel wherever you are. A new addition for 2019 will be a Full Moon Street Food Market in Millennium Place on Saturday 30th November from 10am to 6pm.

Tickets for the Craft and Gift Marquee can now be purchased in advance at a discounted price from the festival website. Full details of Durham Christmas Festival and how to purchase tickets the Craft & Gift Marquee and Children’s Lantern Procession can be found on the website, www.durhamchristmasfestival.com, which will be regularly updated.

Durham Christmas Festival is organised by Durham Markets Company and Durham University, in partnership with Durham Cathedral and Durham BID.
