Professionalising Markets – 5 priorities:

1 NATIONAL BENCHMARKING PROJECT
A formal start is being made with a meeting of a number of markets at the APSE offices in Manchester. NABMA wants this project to be of benefit to the whole markets industry so regular updates will be provided.

2 PITCH UP FOR RETAIL
It is clear many of our members have already forged links with local schools, colleges and universities. NABMA wants to see these links taken further with a formal training qualification which embraces market trading. We will be looking over the next few months to see if we can link up with at least ten colleges.

3 MANAGEMENT MODELS
The survey undertaken by Colin Wolstenholme for NABMA showed that there is still much work to do in this area. To build on the survey results NABMA wants to undertake a good practice study in the coming months to look at up to fifteen markets where attempts have been made to introduce new management models in the last five years. The study will give details of what has happened and provide lessons for others.

4 PERFORMANCE TEMPLATE
We have several examples of how the Performance Template has been used. You can access these examples through the NABMA website at www.nabma.com in the publications section of the menu. Over the next few months NABMA will be seeing how we can make it easier for our members to utilise the Performance Template.

5 MARKET ACCREDITATION
Along the lines of the Purple Flag and Real Deal accreditation NABMA will be looking at how we can give markets a formal accreditation that will enhance their status.

Love Your Local Market Trader Top 30

As part of Love Your Local Market 2017 we are wanting to highlight 30 market traders during the fortnight. The aim is for them to explain why they got into market trading, their tips on trading, what marketing they do etc. By promoting the traders & how they operate it, it not only promotes their business & the market, but it shows what market trading entails to potential new traders. More information on the questions they’ll be asked can be found on the Love Your Local Market Blog here

You may be asking what the trader & the market operator gets from doing this. Well the trader will be featured across social media, the LYLM website & possibly press, thus promoting their business. From a market operator’s point of view it is a way of offering free promotion for your traders & ultimately promotion of your market. Also by promoting traders and highlighting what they do it is a way of showcasing how market trading works to potential new traders. If you have a trader in mind get them to look at the Blog.

Paddy Pie power whips up a market treat for charity – Bury Market

Congratulations to everyone at Bury Market who have raised over £1000 for charity.

Pie lovers have raised more than £1,000 for charity on Bury Market thanks to a specially created delicacy.

Whippy’s Pies teamed up with Key 103’s Paddy McGuiness to create a ‘Paddy Pie’ which was sold on the stall to raise funds for Cash For Kids.

The pie, tasted and approved live on air by Paddy himself, is a hunter’s chicken pie with chicken, ham, barbecue sauce, and topped with cheese.

Peter Whipp, the pie’s creator, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response from our customers for the Paddy Pie, and we’ve raised £1,060 for Cash For Kids, which is wonderful. We’re still selling the pie, so anyone who fancies a tasty treat and wants to help a good cause should visit my stall on Margaret Block 12 every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.”

Peter is now working with Bury Market managers to organise a charity day on Saturday 15 April when the beneficiaries will be Cash for Kids and Bury Hospice.
