❤️ Love Your Local Market & Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

As you will be aware the NABMA plan was to bring back Love Your Local Market to its traditional dates this year of the last two weeks in May (13 – 27 May).On Basecamp in recent days there has been a discussion around what markets are doing around the 4 day weekend, including two bank holidays, in respect of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee (2 – 5 June). At the present there appear to be no consistency although it is almost certain that where market activities are taking place for Love Your Local Market and/or the Jubilee, then flags and bunting etc will be purchased.NABMA has therefore decided that it will be sensible to extend the market celebration period for 2022, from 13 May until 5 June, to link together Love Your Local Market and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This will allow for local events, merchandise and publicity to be merged for greater impact. This will also give NABMA, and our membership, a wider social media opportunity and content, avoid running two social media campaigns and will have a better capture for use of merchandise.NABMA will be offering an opportunity to purchase merchandise and details will be released shortly.

✅ NABMA National Market Survey 2022

NABMA is indebted to Colin Wolstenholme, Bradford,  who has agreed to organise another national survey of markets. Our aim is to launch the survey in April and the results will form part of our National Conference in September. The aim of the survey will be to understand the up to date status of our industry to enable us to provide government and media with information when requested. In addition, the survey will also seek to collect benchmarking information to assist our membership. Finally, we will look to capture information coming out of the pandemic around market investment plans and also markets that may be at risk. If you have questions that you feel should perhaps be asked within a survey then please email Colin Wolstenholme colin.wolstenholme@bradford.gov.uk

Leeds Market

At Leeds we hold regular markets in the main shopping area of Leeds city centre, some we run ourselves and others we charge a fee to an operator for the hire of the space. We often get asked by a variety of operators to host different markets in the city centre but want to ensure that these markets not only compliment and bring something to the city but also meet a certain level of quality We want to review the markets we hold in the city centre and would like to hold a review of our street markets with our partners to gather their views.  Has any other market done such a review and if so are there any terms of reference you used for the review that you would be happy to share with us. If you do then please contact me directly steven.mason@leeds.gov.uk

✅ PAVEMENT LICENCE CONSULTATION

Several of our London members have made us aware of a consultation on the continuance of Pavement Licence which raises a number of concerns for them. A link to the consultation is provided below and unfortunately the consultation closes on Friday so urgent action is required. When the Pavement Licence arrangements were introduced we expressed concern to government about a number of  issues but sadly this concern was not taken into account. The only concession we secured was that if a Pavement Licence Application impacted significantly on the operation of existing street trading or market arrangements then there would be a ground for refusing the application. Our London members are concerned primarily about the following: 1 The loss in income to existing street trading activities2 The unfairness of Pavement Licences taking up such larger areas of space for a lower licence fee.3  The inability to charge a daily fee.4  The need for consultation on the implementation of proposals before a final decision is made. When we last raised this issue there appeared to be little interest outside of London but this might be because street trading, outside of London, is handled by the licensing section rather than the markets team. If this is so can you please direct this email to your licensing colleagues as a matter of urgency. The link to the consultation is as follows:  https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=EGg0v32c3kOociSi7zmVqGAi-k_JmURMkx_BAcg_hitUMFQ2Uk03NFZWOUtMQTZLTUpRVEtGM1ZIUy4u

✅ NABMA 100 – NABMA People

NABMA was delighted to welcome a number of first time delegates to our Birmingham Conference last week. A topic of question became the history of our organisation, and this has also coincidentally  been picked up by a Historical Appreciation Society over the weekend. In 2019, to commemorate the NABMA centenary, a publication was launched as a celebration of the history, events, headline and people from the NABMA archives. As a reminder the booklet can be read nabma-100-booklet-rs.pdf A Wakefield Society has now shared a  1981 picture from the booklet of Chris New, now our Member Services Consultant, and then the Senior Markets Manager at Wakefield, with well know and highly respected NABMA members of the day from Leeds,  namely Maureen Newall and Malcolm Prince.  NABMA is pleased to see its publication continuing to be viewed from far and wide. We also acknowledge and applaud the service of Chris New to the markets industry and NABMA for well over 50 years. Thank you Chris for all the valued support and help you have, and continue, to offer to colleagues in our industry on a daily basis.
