✅ Retail Markets Survey 2021/22

Since 2011, NABMA have carried out retail market surveys of the country’s retail markets to record year-on-year changes. This year, the survey has been reviewed and improved to include a greater depth and breadth of impact measurements. In addition, to provide a more accurate measurement then the section of the survey that measures year-on-year changes in performance will compare 2021/22 with 2019/20 as the Covid pandemic in 2020/21 would provide inaccurate performance comparisons.      This survey is open to operators of retail markets and non-traditional retail markets, such as operators of specialist events, including fairs, festivals, concerts, shows and fetes.      The findings will be presented at our conference in September so your support in completing this survey is extremely important to us. Once again NABMA is grateful to Colin Wolstenholme, Markets Manager Bradford who is managing this Survey. You will be required to complete a separate survey for each market and we expect that providing you have gathered the necessary information beforehand the survey for each market should take no longer than 10/15 minutes. Whilst a lot of the information required is fairly straightforward, here’s the information that you may want to start to collate now prior to the launch of the retail market the survey on Monday 23 May 2022  The number of permanent (regular) and casual (non-regular) traders trade on the marketTypical % average occupancy level at 1st December 2021 and 31st March 2022Typical charges for each stall/shop including any additional ad-hoc chargesThe value of any investment in improving the market between two periods –  1st April 2018 to 31st March 2021 and 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2022, and how these were funded.Any major redevelopment proposals planned to start this or next year and whether this includes any government fundingActual or estimated footfall figures from 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2022.Details of your annual marketing/promotional budget.Details of any new initiatives that has been successful in attracting new traders and/or increased shopper visits.   Yours sincerely David Preston (BA Hons)Chief ExecutiveThe National Association of British Market Authorities

✅ GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR MARKETS

NABMA is grateful to Simon Baynes MP, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Markets Group, for facilitating a meeting with Neil O’Brien MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, to discuss market issues. The Minister has responsibility for Town Centres and Markets. This meeting, followed a very positive meeting with Department officials, when Markets were identified as one of the potential recipients of funding from the government’s new Shared Prosperity Fund.  The meeting provided NABMA with the opportunity to raise a number of issues with the Minister and he was clear that Markets have “a big part to play in the massive challenge” of revitalising Town Centres. He said he was “extremely enthusiastic “ about the positive role Markets can play. It is important that we translate this goodwill into meaningful action. The Minister gave his endorsement to LYLM and we are hoping to arrange a visit for him to a local Market in his constituency in the early part of the campaign. While there is still a long way to go NABMA is encouraged by recent events indicating that our message for government to show its support for Markets is beginning to have an impact. We are fortunate to enjoy a direct link to government through the Retail Markets Forum and the fact that we can have a face to face meeting with the Minister demonstrates the value attached to Markets. David Preston,Chief Executive

✅ SHARED PROSPERITY FUND

This morning we had a meeting of the Government’s Retail Markets Forum and it is pleasing to report some positive news for the markets industry. The Government is making available £2.6bn of new funding for local investment by March 2025 with all areas of the UK embraced by the proposals. There will be an allocation of revenue and capital funding. There are three investment priorities:1 Communities and Place2 Supporting Local Businesses3 People and Skills What is great news for the markets industry is that we have been successful in getting a specific reference to investment in markets as one of the key elements of the funding help. In addition there is employment support which can be used to help establish new market traders. While the funding will be administered by Unitary and District Council NABMA has obtained assurances that Local Councils will be included in the Partnerships that need to be established to draw up and implement plans for using funding opportunities. We have urged the Government to be quite clear about this in guidance that is offered. This funding is not available to national organisations, like NABMA and NMTF, but I did receive confirmation that any local authorities can apply to use the funding for national projects like Love Your Local Market and Young Trader Markets. This could be a great help in increasing the profile of these national campaigns. We will keeping a close watch on how these resources are used but this is a golden opportunity for the markets industry and one we must not waste. Updates will be provided as they become available.

😊 Market stall canopies

We’re looking for a refresh of our tired market stall canopies at Newcastle-under-Lyme Market. There’s some excitement here about the photo of Stratford-upon-Avon multi-coloured canopies. We have bespoke stalls which would need a unique manufacturing approach, but any information on companies that could swap stripes for bright coloured vinyl would be much appreciated.Nick
