✅ Developing Markets as Community Hubs
In recent months NABMA has been pleases to work with Leeds University on the Markets4People research project. The project aimed to generate new tools, evidence and proposals for understanding and enhancing the community value of traditional retail markets in the UK.An outcome of the project is the production of a best practice handbook that is a practical guide for market operators on how to operate and develop traditional retail markets (TRMs) as community hubs for inclusive economies. This handbook provides a new and freely accessible resource for any market operator looking to pursue an inclusive, community-oriented and holistic approach to operating and developing traditional retail markets while avoiding gentrification. It is aimed primarily at local authorities, which operate 82% of markets in the UK, but will also be relevant to private operators (10%) and markets operated by cooperatives, social enterprises and community interest companies (8%).Download the Operator Handbook Yours sincerely David Preston (BA Hons)Chief ExecutiveThe National Association of British Market Authorities

✅ Legal Support
Last year NABMA organised two very successful legal seminars that provided an update on various issues relating to market law. They were delivered by Graham Wilson, NABMA’s Legal and Policy Consultant, and covered such issues as knowing your market powers, market licensing arrangements, management models, market policies and procedures and trader relations. These legal seminars were followed by an opportunity of undertaking one to one work with Graham on issues of particular relevance to individual members. A number of members took advantage of these one to one opportunities and below is some of the subsequent feedback received. TAMWORTH BOROUGH COUNCIL “ The help and support to us at Tamworth has been exceptional” EPPING TOWN COUNCIL “ Many thanks for all your help. I have loved learning about the market law intricacies and hugely appreciate the knowledge you have shared with us” CAMBRIDGE CITY COUNCIL “ Thank you for your thorough examination of the issues and clear advice” NABMA is looking to organise two further legal seminars in May and June and, at this time, I am seeking to ascertain the level of interest of member participation. Further details will be sent out in a few weeks but if you would like to assure your place (s) now please email info@nabma.com
👏 An exciting Market Development Opportunity that has arisen at Milton Keynes.
MKDP seeks development partner for Milton Keynes market opportunity · Ahead of a full tender process, expected to take place this summer, MKDP has appointed Activate – Workman Placemaking to lead the search for a development partner to help transform this centrally-located commercial space, into a vibrant, future-proof destination.· Currently covering 3,446m2 of Grade A retail space, the scheme contains a strong core of 100 existing outdoor commercial units. Milton Keynes Development Partnership (MKDP) has announced its intention to seek an investment, development, and operational partner to facilitate the development of Milton Keynes Open Market, a centrally located, prime commercial space. MKDP has appointed Activate, Workman’s in-house placemaking team, to assess initial interest in this scheme. As the landowner, MKDP is seeking a partner to help transform Milton Keynes Open Market into a destination retail, leisure, and food and beverage scheme which will be future-proofed against market changes by providing a dynamic, modern, customer experience to local residents, and visitors, whilst retaining the market’s core values and appeal. MKDP is keen to work with partners with broad experience in the retail destination sector, and remain open to new ideas, and innovative concepts for the space. Tracey Aldworth, MKDP’s Managing Director said: “MKDP is seeking comments, and enquiries, from partners keen to enter into a long-term agreement and is open to partnering with a singular institution, or a consortium. We are also seeking the views of potential partners to determine the best-suited contractual vehicle for the development of this site.” Esther Worboys, Placemaking Manager for Activate, said: “Milton Keynes Market is an essential element of Milton Keynes’ civic fabric, and retail offer. The market is centrally located on Midsummer Boulevard and immediately adjacent to the centre:mk shopping centre which attracts 23.4mn visitors per year. We are keen to find a partner who will work with MKDP on both operating the market as it is in the short-term, but also developing it in the medium to long-term into a destination for local residents and visitors.” For more information, visit www.mkdp.org.uk or email activate@workman.co.uk Responses must be received by May 6th, 2022.
✅ Benchmarking
NABMA continues to promote benchmarking through our partnership with APSE but the number of members participating is still somewhat disappointing and we need to raise further interest to make it a worthwhile NABMA membership benefit. It is difficult to understand the reason for this situation when around sixty NABMA members already pay for the service through their membership of the APSE. Currently less than a third of the sixty are involved in Benchmarking Markets. If you are not part of APSE then there is an additional cost to be involved in Benchmarking Markets. The true cost is over £1,000 but we previously reached an agreement with APSE for a reduced cost of around £800. Unfortunately the reduced cost has still not proved attractive. Following further discussions with APSE we are now prepared to reduce the cost of non APSE members to £250 for two years with NABMA picking up the deficit on the cost to APSE. Given the scale of the NABMA contribution that will be required we can probably include a maximum of twenty five members at this reduced rate. NABMA still believes that Benchmarking Markets is an important part of our membership services and, in this context, we are prepared to commit substantial resources over the next two years to make the current Benchmarking arrangements more meaningful and viable. This offer is currently only open to our District and Unitary members but we hope to do something for our Local Council members later in the year. If you are interested in being included in list of members taking part in Benchmarking on the basis of making a payment of £250 in each of the next two years please get in touch. info@nabma.com APSE is planning to hold a Markets Benchmarking Workshop in June which will provide an opportunity of learning all about Benchmarking Markets and answering any questions you might want to raise. Hi all,Does anyone have contacts for traveling market/event companies? I have tried Market Place Europe a few times and don’t even get a response after initial call.I’m not set on a specific type of market or event just want to look at options as we have a good sized event square which I am actively looking to get booked up and have had great success with own own events and local organisation but I still think we are missing a trick or something interesting, plus earning a few quid for the budget would help!!We are in the East Anglia regionThanksDan
