You will appreciate that in the last few weeks we have been appealing for help to assess the state of the markets industry. The 2022 National Survey is probably our most important Survey given the events of the recent pandemic. With the government agenda for levelling up, communities and supporting the high street then having evidence to take to government and high street partners is critical for NABMA. To date we have just 76 completed returns that means we will not be able to produce a meaningful analysis which will impact on the credibility of NABMA, and market operators, given that government is waiting to see the results of the Survey. This is by far the lowest figure, at this stage, since we first launched our Surveys over ten years ago. We are seeking around 250 returns. It is impossible for us to talk with government, on your behalf, and press the case for markets and funding when we do not possess the statistical analysis. To the 600 Markets included within the NABMA membership that have yet to reply, what are you waiting for? The Survey only takes around twenty minutes to complete for each Market you operate. We need you to complete the Survey NOW. Parish and Town Councils are the growth area in our membership and probably receive the greatest support from the NABMA team at present, and yet less than a dozen have returned surveys so far. With your interest in the future of market towns then why is this the case? In the next few days, unless we see a rapid increase in responses, we will have no option other than to start ringing operators making personal requests for this information. Please save us this additional time and cost. Please make the completion of the survey your priority this week. Market Management board at Leeds Market
Hi All, at Leeds we run the market with a Market Management board and hold these meetings every eight weeks which are at a more strategic level, this isn’t a decision making board only advisory but allows us to update members on what is happening with the market and be used as a check and challenge for ideas we may wish to implement. The board consists of market management, trader reps both indoor and outdoor, local ward members and independent business representatives. Minutes are taken and sent out to all traders via email for their information. Outside of this as managers we have operational meetings with trader reps on a monthly basis to discuss any day to day issues. We have done this for a number of years now and are always looking to see if there are better ways of doing things so would be interested to understand what other markets have in place to support them with the running of the market, and how this works for them and the traders. Have you booked yet for this joint event? If you are a local council do any of your elected members wish to join us? Throughout the pandemic markets have provided essential services to their local communities. Many markets are now operated by local councils and more are considering delivering this important local service that can help regenerate high streets and town centres and provide start up business opportunities. Markets can also be an important part of the levelling up agenda in terms of improving public services and helping to restore a sense of community and local pride. This event will look at recent changes to legislation in terms of planning and the use of public realm. Importantly it will discuss how a local council can operate a market, both in terms of legislation and a policy framework. It will also share good practice and case studies from successful markets. ✅ NABMA Retail Markets Survey 2021/22 – Please Help Us
NABMA is both disappointed and worried at the slow response to date to our Retail Markets Survey. We have a real concern at present as to why our membership is not supporting us to complete this 15-minute survey? Around 300 markets are needed to make this a meaningful exercise to provide evidence for NABMA to use with government and other partners. If NABMA is to press the importance and value of markets to government, and other high street partners, then we need statistical proof of our case rather than hearsay. Please help us, to in turn, help you. Please set aside in your diary some time in the next week to complete the Survey. https://nabma.com/retail-markets-survey-2021-22/ For new market officers, then as background since 2011, NABMA have carried out retail market surveys of the country’s retail markets to record year-on-year changes. This year, the survey has been reviewed and improved to include a greater depth and breadth of impact measurements. In addition, to provide a more accurate measurement then the section of the survey that measures year-on-year changes in performance will compare 2021/22 with 2019/20 as the Covid pandemic in 2020/21 would provide inaccurate performance comparisons. This survey is open to operators of retail markets and non-traditional retail markets, such as operators of specialist events, including fairs, festivals, concerts, shows and fetes. The findings will be presented at our conference in September. Once again NABMA is grateful to Colin Wolstenholme, Markets Manager Bradford who is managing this Survey. Colin puts a tremendous amount of work into setting up the survey and undertaking the analysis and is deserving of the widest possible support. Hopefully our plea to you will result in more returns in the next few days. Yours sincerely David Preston (BA Hons)Chief ExecutiveThe National Association of British Market Authorities

Seeking contacts for a design & build project
Hi all, At Swansea Market we’re currently seeking a company that can deliver a design and build project. It involves the upgrade and modernisation of the exteriors of the 3 main entrances of the Market. If anyone has any contacts that they think would be suitable for such a project, I’d be really keen to have their details! Many thanks for any help you may be able to give. Kind regardsSarah (Swansea Market)
