❤️ Markets Parliamentary Question
NABMA works closely with Simon Baynes MP, the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Markets Group. We have had wonderful support from Simon in attending and supporting our events, and particularly during Love Your Local Market when he visited markets and secured the support of the Prime Minister for the Campaign. As a follow up to Love Your Local Market, Simon raised a question in the House of Commons to Paul Scully MP, the Parliamentary Under – Secretary (BEIS) and Minister of State for London. Our Chairman first declared an interest as the chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Markets Group and then added. “The “Love Your Local Market” campaign, supported by many Members across the House, has just come to an end. Does my hon. Friend agree that local markets and traders are a vital part of the local business community and make a huge economic contribution to the health of our high streets and the regeneration of our city and town centres?” The response from the Minister confirmed that “I congratulate my hon. Friend on his work and interest. We absolutely recognise the contribution that markets make to the vibrancy and diversity of our high streets up and down the country, and indeed of our town centres. We believe that local markets should stay at the heart of community life, and we want them to flourish all over the country”. This is an excellent statement that the industry can use to highlight further government support for markets, particularly within the levelling up agenda and local funding bids.
👏 Cambridge Market Canopy Replacement Project
Cambridge City Council Markets and Street Trading Management team have now put live the advert for submission of tenders to replace the well-known and loved candy striped canopies of Cambridge Market. We are looking for a company to supply and fit the entire market at the earliest possible time in the same style as is currently in place. We are now pleased to announce that this opportunity has been put live to tender on the Nationwide local authority contract portal (Proactis) and can be found using the links below. In order to be considered for this contract, you must be registered and submit the necessary responses via the portal (even if a quote has already been supplied direct). Please note that the timescale on this is short and tender submission will close next week on Tuesday 28th June 2022. This is due to the canopy replacement being a priority job and we intend to expedite decisions regarding the award of the contract in a similar fashion. If you are not already registered with the contract portal, registration takes as little as 10 minutes and is completely free and will give you access to contracts from local authorities all over the country and can be done via the links below Proactis Portal Advert Link: https://procontract.due-north.com/Advert?advertId=181b2b3d-7bf1-ec11-8115-005056b64545&fromProjectDashboard=True Contracts Finder Advert Link: https://www.contractsfinder.service.gov.uk/Notice/eda25311-c928-4182-8d64-dcaee9cffad6 Please submit any and all queries through the portals only as this is a council-procurement project so must be done through the correct channels. ✅ NABMA Midlands and Wales Regional Conference – Cancelled
Unfortunately, despite best efforts, we have decided to cancel the Midlands and Wales Event on Thursday 23 June due to very low numbers as booked. This is very disappointing. With the handful of bookings as received then cancellation was the only option. The next Regional event is on 28 July and although having a focus on London and the South will be available to all. We hope that NABMA members will support this next free event.Yours sincerelyDavid Preston (BA Hons)Chief ExecutiveThe National Association of British Market Authorities
Business distributing samples on a market
In Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre we have a very successful Artisan market each month with high footfall.Last week a donut chain opened in a shop overlooking the market. We were delighted with their impact and success on their opening day on Friday 17 June. Opening again on Sunday, the manager took the decision to capitalise on the increased footfall at our Artisan Market to distribute samples of their donuts to our visitors. We had a discussion as to whether this was ethically right and legally within their license.I advised that our confectionary trade was suffering and that our traders should not have competition in this way. The manager insisted that they could do this in a public area but was kind enough to stop it whilst I sought advice. My question is that even though the public footpath forms part of our market, can I prevent them from wandering among our market visitors with their samples and impact on the trade of our cake sellers?Green is the public footpaths – blue is the market area. Traders trade inwards. Thanks

✅ Launch of NABMA Support Sessions and Mentors 2022
NABMA has been undertaking a review of all its services as our industry comes out of Covid. Two valued membership services in recent years have been NABMA Health Checks and Mentors. We are now pleased to relaunch these important NABMA service under the new branding of NABMA Support Sessions and NABMA Mentors. NABMA Support SessionsNABMA is proud to have a long established team of very experienced market managers who are pleased to interact with colleagues around the country to discuss local operational market issues where advice is needed. This much used NABMA membership service has now being restructured with both online or on site discussions possible. We are now able to offer two options. Option 1 is for a one hour zoom session and then a follow up with a brief summary email from the NABMA appointed Advisor Option 2 is for a day visit from a NABMA Advisor, to be charged at a fee set by NABMA plus travel, subsistence and accommodation. On site visits to normally be of one day duration only, unless agreed directly with NABMA. Please email your expression of interest, or if you would like more information then please ask for a chat with our Support Session Manager Rob Nixon rob.nixon@outlook.com or our Member Services Consultant Chris chrisnew@nabma.com Market MentorsAt some time all market managers need to be able to chat and share an issue with a fellow market professional. Coming out of the pandemic, with its onerous change agenda and often working in isolation, or in small teams, then having a friendly voice on the end of a phone can be invaluable in terms of support and sharing knowledge Our Market Mentor Team can offer support for Outdoor Markets • Professional Training • Specialist Markets • Wholesale Markets • Indoor Markets • Car Boot Sales etc. Very soon our NABMA website will publish the new list of Mentors for 2022. NABMA is grateful to each of these experienced Market Officers that are prepared to share an issue and support their colleagues. In summary, we trust that these revised services will be welcomed by the NABMA membership at a time of both opportunities and challenges.
👏 Canopies
Hello All,Here at Cambridge Market, our permanent fixed PVC canopies are in need of some replacement. There are “custom” aspects to this project including the gable ends etc. We have searched through previous forums but have not found anything suggesting a suitable option…Does anyone have any links or suggestions on where to find the following: – The required technical specifications required for an outdoor public market in regards to the safety or industry standards for such canopies, especially those surrounding heat and fire retardancy etc. – Companies that we might be able to reach out to that make AND install such canopies. (we are not looking to make any changes to the design of these and want the same style of “candy striped” colourful stall tops) This will be put out to tender as we are a council-run market, however, we are hoping there might be someone out there who can make some helpful suggestions to help get us moving in the right direction. Thank You 🙂
