Please support your colleagues and let’s talk markets. Our grateful thanks are extended to Market Place who are the NABMA principal sponsor for 2022/23. Why a Regional Event? The three Summer Regional Conferences focus on how markets are emerging from the pandemic, the change agenda alongside a range of topical market issues. The theme of the events is ‘Markets Delivering Change’. Each event will have a regional flavour as we want to give people a chance to talk about what is happening locally. We also want to help you build up local contacts. Feel free however to sign up for any, or all the events. The programme next week will include A welcome from NABMA President Councillor Mick Barker and Market Place, our Event Sponsor Two years after the start of the pandemic a market team will look at the impact of the pandemic, the changes in their high street and what help, if any, their market activities have been given. How does this market view its future? A private sector market company looks at the impact of the pandemic in terms of market management, operational changes and event planning. What are the options that may be available in an era of change for market history and tradition? The pandemic has seen changes in planning legislation, the encouragement of flexibility in the use of public realm, and freedoms to extend market activities. NABMA looks at the implications and impact on markets and local strategies arising from these government announcements. How is the role of the traditional manager changing? What is the interaction between place and market management? What is the skill set needed to deliver professional market operations? We ask the questions and look at how NABMA can further support market managers, teams and their professional development.

✅ BUSINESS RATES

At the first of our Regional Meetings we highlighted the current review of Business Rates assessments prior to a new Valuation List being published in 2023. At the moment work is being undertaken, as a prelude to the new Valuation List, and many Markets will have received a request for information (normally a VO6028). You should return this form with all the relevant information so that the new assessment accurately reflects the current situation of your Market. If you have any issues or need help with completing the form NABMA has a Business Rates Consultant who can assist you. You just need to get in touch. David Preston Chief Executive

✅ Benchmarking Markets

As you know we have been working with APSE to relaunch Benchmarking Markets. As part of the relaunch we offered members, who are currently not APSE members, a substantial discount on the normal non APSE rate. While the current rate is around £800 NABMA will subsidise any member wanting to take part in Benchmarking Markets so that the cost for the next two years will only be £250 each year. In order to assist in making a final decision on whether to participate in Benchmarking Markets APSE will be running a Benchmarking Workshop on JULY 21st ( originally this event was to be held in June but because of non availability of speakers a new date had to be found ). The Workshop will be a virtual event. We have tried various initiatives to encourage Benchmarking and have been disappointed that more of our members have not signed up to participate in this important service. This latest offer, with a potential substantial subsidy from NABMA, is probably our final attempt to encourage participation. If you are at all interested in Benchmarking Markets reserve JULY 21st now and await further details.  David Preston (BA Hons)Chief ExecutiveThe National Association of British Market Authorities

✅ SHARED PROSPERITY FUND

The Shared Prosperity Fund which makes £2.6b available to local authorities by 2025 provides an opportunity for Markets to get help for both revenue and capital projects. This means that our members can, for example, bid to procure resources to get new traders, to support LYLM and other initiatives operated by NABMA and NMTF. NABMA has persuaded government to make a specific reference in the guidance to supporting  Markets so this is a great chance to for us to get some additional resources. However it is important that any projects we put forward are soon ready to go as the government is telling us that local authorities need to submit their Investment Plan by 1st August. While the responsibility for dealing with the funding resides with District and Unitary Councils the government is urging these Councils to work in partnership with other interested organisations. In this context NABMA is urging all District and Unitary members to include in their partnership arrangements Local Councils as many of these Local Councils now operate market services. We would encourage Local Councils to get in touch with District and Unitary Councils and insist that they are included in discussions about bidding opportunities.
