Borough Market Reopens & has a Royal Visit

Borough Market reopened yesterday (Wednesday 14th June) after it had been closed for 10 days since the atrocities that happened on Saturday 3rd June. At 9.30am people came together to pause for a poignant minute’s silence. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, joined traders & visitors in the minute’s silence. Then at 10am, market trader, Paul Wheeler rang the bell to signal the reopening of the market.  The day was filled with mixed emotions.

Today, Thursday 15th June, HRH Prince Harry visited Borough Market to show his support. This article in the Evening Standard shows Prince Harry’s visit.

Borough Market Trader Appeal – Please Support

This has been a very distressing week for everyone involved with Borough Market and the terrorist attack has had a serious impact on the running of the Market. Graham Wilson has kept in touch with Darren Henaghan (Managing Director of Borough Market) and Darren has asked for the letter below to be circulated to NABMA members. If you are able to help please do so.

“Thank you so much to all of our NABMA friends who have sent myself and Donald messages of support. We are sorry we haven’t been able to reply to everyone. As you can imagine we have been a bit busy.

On Saturday night the unimaginable happened. A food market, which stands for so much positivity, community and love was the focus of hate. Our thoughts are all with the victims of that senseless violence that affected people from all over the world.

The market has now been closed for a week. The traders, although they would never admit it are struggling.

Please see this press release (Borough Market Traders Fund) that says it better than I can, but in short we have set up an appeal to support our traders that can be accessed here: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/bmrelieffund

I hope you will be able to support this and show the world how markets come together at a time of need to support our traders.”

Love Your Local Market Thunderclap #LYLM2017

As you will be aware we are currently in the middle of Love Your Local Market fortnight #LYLM2017 & all across the country (& overseas) our market colleagues are running events, putting on youth markets, providing free stalls for start ups etc. All we would like of you is 2 mins of your time today (Friday) to join our Love Your Local Market Thunderclap on Social Media to show your support for markets. For those who have not come across a Thunderclap before it is just a way of everyone who signs up to it, sending out a tweet/Facebook message (that we’ve already written – about supporting markets) at the same time. Even though you all sign up at different times the technology is put in place to delay it going out until the same time so as to create the biggest awareness for the campaign. We need 100+ people to sign up to it for it to go live tomorrow (Saturday) & we’re currently at 54 so any help would be much appreciated.

The link is: https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/57141-love-your-local-market & all you have to do is follow the instructions, but basically agreeing to using the Thunderclap app to show your support.

NABMA and NMTF agree Markets Manifesto in advance of 2017 GENERAL ELECTION

With the 2017 General Election around the corner NABMA & NMTF agree Markets Manifesto.

The 2017 Markets Manifesto seeks assurances that markets will continue to have a voice in policy making, building on the existing work that we undertake through the Department for Communities and Local Government’s Retail Market Forum and the All Party Parliamentary Markets Group.

We have retained two of the issues from 2015, namely the removal of the business rates burden and a review of street trading legislation, but we have included issues that emphasise the challenge of supporting the next generation – in particular, how markets provide opportunities for young entrepreneurs.

The Markets Manifesto highlights some of the projects that NABMA and the NMTF are currently promoting, including Love Your Local Market, Pitch up for Retail, and the National Youth Market, and highlights the the roles we play in supporting apprenticeships, self-employment, and training hubs.

You can read more about the Markets Manifesto on the Mission 4 Markets website

Bolton’s Feast of Fun for Markets

Bolton is setting its stall out to celebrate market culture as part of the Love Your Local Market campaign. The council has organised a teenage market this Saturday (13th May) and a day of fun and entertainment at Bolton Market next weekend in support of this month’s Love Your Local Market (#LYLM2017) fortnight.

Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Cliff Morris, said: “Markets are a crucial part of the local economy and attract visitors to our town. Our teenage markets have been a real success and it’s great to see young people getting involved. We also have a wonderful, popular market in the heart of Bolton, visited by people from across the region, and it is great to see markets being celebrated in this way.”

The Teenage Market will be on Victoria Square, on Saturday, May 13 from 10am to 4pm. A total of 31 pitches have been snapped up. Aspiring independent entrepreneurs from Bolton and the region will be selling a range of products including everything from the latest craze – fidget spinners – to cakes, comics and crafts.

Young performers will showcase their musical and dancing talents with performances from samba band Bloco Ashe at 11am, four piece rock band Ghost Cheeks will take to the stage at 1pm; Motion Bridge will rock Bolton at 2pm and acoustic group Thursdays Child will be on at 3pm. Visitors can also have a go at a range of sports including football, boxing, and cycling.

The week after, on Saturday, May 20, Bolton Market will also host a fun day from 11am to 4pm to celebrate LYLM fortnight.

Live music, free face painting, cookery demos and floral masterclasses will be held in the Lifestyle Hall.

Traders from food stalls Nkono and Rice N Oodle will rustle up dishes, and floral experts from Plantations will also deliver masterclasses on how to put arrangements together. Visitors also have the chance to win a tropical flower arrangement.

Children can have a go at a climbing wall and boxing ring, and birds of prey will also be on display at the outdoor market.
